Myth-busting: The top four misconceptions about dental implants
Dental implants are a comfortable, reliable and long-lasting option for individuals who have missing teeth – whether it is a single missing tooth or a full set of missing teeth
It can be very distressing to have a missing tooth, especially if it is somewhere visible as it will impact the look of the smile and, consequently, the individual’s self-confidence. Very often, it can also impact on which foods can be enjoyed.
There is no denying that dental implants are the gold standard for tooth replacement, however, we often hear patients’ concerns about having dental implants fitted, whether it is because of something they read or heard, preventing them from taking the next steps.
Our Clinical Director, Dr James Harrison, has many years of experience and a high success rate with patients who have fixed their smiles after undertaking this treatment, with many sharing their life-changing stories.
Here, James explores the top four myths about dental implants:
Dental implants are expensive
We believe nothing should get in the way of smiling or talking confidently, nor eating your favourite foods. Dental implants are an amazing gift as they can bring your self-confidence back and restore the ability to do the things you enjoy the most without having to worry about loose or ill-fitting dentures.
Long term studies suggest that dental implants have a lifetime of up to 20 years. If you think about every photograph, meals with family and friends, smiles, and all the other social interactions during that period, the investment is truly fantastic.
At Blossom Dental Care, we offer finance options over 12, 24 and 36 months, making dental implants accessible to all our patients who are looking to bring their confidence back, and allowing them to follow their ideal plan.
Dental implants are painful
Advances in surgical technology and the development of a range of 3D imaging techniques make dental implant fittings less invasive and with a more successful outcome than ever before.
The treatment does require surgery; however, most procedures are carried out under local anaesthetic. Your gums will be numbed so you will not feel any discomfort, whilst anxious or nervous patients are also offered sedation. After your treatment, over-the-counter painkillers are usually sufficient to control any discomfort, with most patients reporting they feel normal after 24 hours.
Dental implants are all the same
Again, many patients believe that there is no difference between dental implants, with some opting for cheaper options available in the market. This couldn’t be further from the truth, as cheaper dental implants lack the research, quality and reliability that you would usually expect with a high-quality treatment. Some clinics also use copy implants which, just like any other fake goods, rarely live up to expectations.
As we would never risk our patients’ care, security and longevity of their results, at Blossom Dental Care we rely on dental implants from world-leading companies. Working closely with Dentsply Implants, who have over 25 years of clinically validated research, our patients can rest assured that they are getting the best long-term solution for their smiles.
In addition to this, our award-winning laboratory is so confident of the accuracy and craftsmanship of their dental implant crowns and bridges that they offer a 5-year warranty.
Not everyone is suitable for dental implants
In recent years, the number of patients who are suitable for dental implant treatment has increased significantly due to medical advances, meaning that most individuals with missing teeth can benefit from it.
To ensure you can choose the best available treatment option, we recommend speaking to your dentist about replacing a missing tooth or teeth as early as possible. A missing tooth can cause the neighbouring teeth to drift out of position, resulting in further fracture and tooth loss; it can also result in an ageing ‘caved-in’ appearance of the face.
