Today, we’ll talk specifically about orthodontics and whether cases of teeth straightening are covered on the NHS.

So, what’s the difference between NHS and private care?

The NHS partly funds a range of routine dental treatments, most of which are common procedures like crowns and extractions. It does not tend to fund what’s called ‘cosmetic’ treatments, which could involve procedures like teeth whitening and braces.

Can I get my teeth straightened on the NHS?

Teeth straightening, also known as orthodontic treatment, is used to improve the smile’s appearance by repositioning the teeth. This might be to correct crookedness or gaps in the smile or improve functionality, like bite alignment.

Currently, NHS orthodontic treatment is only free for those under 18 who have a ‘health need’ for treatment. Those over 18 are assessed through grading to see if the case is severe enough for NHS treatment. Because of this, NHS treatment isn’t usually available for adults.

Can I get my teeth straightened privately?

Absolutely, and that’s something we offer at our dental practice near York. Our team are highly experienced in orthodontics and offers treatments such as Invisalign to straighten teeth. Because private care can be more costly than NHS care, we also offer a 0% interest finance plan (terms apply) to patients wishing to undergo orthodontic treatment with us.

Do you offer NHS treatment?

Yes, we do. However, as we’ve mentioned, orthodontic care isn’t usually covered on the NHS. But, we might be able to help with more basic and routine treatments like crowns and fillings. NHS pricing works through bands, which you can see on our pricing page. If in doubt about whether a treatment is covered, just talk to our team.

What if I don’t seek treatment?

Your concerns could get worse over time and, depending on your case, your oral health could suffer. For example, you might find it difficult to keep your teeth clean and develop dental decay, or certain teeth might become worn and damaged due to their positioning and need extraction down the line.
