So, what’s available?
There are lots of options for missing teeth, such as dental implants, dentures, and treatments like dental bridges. Even dental implants themselves have several solutions, depending on how many teeth you have missing, and whereabouts in your smile.
What are dentures?
These are false teeth that fit over your gums and can be temporarily attached to the inside of your mouth using a fixative. While they’re often a cheaper option, they can be prone to slipping and clicking. But, being removable, some find them easier to keep clean.
What are dental implants?
Dental Implants are false teeth that are permanently implanted into your gums through a minor surgical procedure. These can be a more costly option, but with the right care (and healing), can last a lifetime. Better still, they look and act like your natural teeth and can ‘suit in’ with your smile.
What types of dental implants are there?
Single dental implants, which replace individual teeth. Implant-supported bridges, can replace several teeth by using an implant on either side of one or more false teeth. And implant-retained dentures, which replace a whole set (or both sets) of teeth. These use a stud-like system to fix the teeth in place.
How is a tooth implant placed?
A small incision is made in the gum, followed by a small hole. The metal implant is screwed into place, and once healing has taken place, a porcelain crown is fitted over it to replace the tooth. You can wear a temporary crown during healing.
