Foods To Avoid With Clear Braces
So you have signed up for Invisalign clear braces – what’s next? Well, you’ll need to know a bit about cleaning and caring for your braces, as well as a few dos and don’ts. Today, we’ll look at how to keep your clear braces beautifully, well, and clear – and whether you need to make any changes to your diet, which foods to avoid and lifestyle changes to do this.
So, what’s it all about?
We’ll start by talking a bit about what clear braces are made of. Although it may vary between providers, brands like Invisalign craft theirs from clear acrylic. It’s known to be durable, hygienic and comfortable in the mouth, but unfortunately, staining and cloudiness can occur if these clear braces aren’t properly looked after.
What are foods to avoid eating?
It’s really important to know that you shouldn’t eat anything – or drink anything, for that matter – when you’re wearing clear braces. Although it’s fine to drink water while wearing your Invisalign, since it’s a neutral liquid, generally you should take out your clear braces before you eat or drink. Not only can they stain easily, but the biting and chewing forces could damage your braces and potentially harm your mouth, teeth, and gums. The good news is, though, that since you’ll need to remove your braces, you won’t technically have to change what you eat or when.
What should I do when I eat?
Simply take out your Invisalign braces, give them a rinse, and pop them in their case. After you’ve finished eating and drinking, give them a quick brush if you can, and brush your teeth, too. Pop them back in again and you’re good to go.
Can I chew gum?
No! As well as the potential for staining and discolouring, the gum could get stuck in your lovely clear braces. As it hardens over time, it could be a real problem getting it cleaned off.
What about smoking and vaping?
Again, we wouldn’t recommend this, not just for oral health reasons, but because again, discolouration is a possibility. If you have been looking for a reason to kick the habit, perhaps lovely straight teeth could be the motivation!
